Arriving in Goondiwindi (“Gundy” to us locals) at 2:00pm on the Saturday afternoon, I hopped out of the cool comfort of my car’s air conditioning and was immediately hit with the intense heat of the place. The atmosphere at the registration area was electric as people queued up to get their race numbers and tickets to the carbo load dinner in the park that night.

I’m sure many people set personal records on the day, but for me I achieved making it to Penrith in 40 minutes, car park to registration in 5mins, through transition in 2 minutes, sprint to swim start in 3 minutes and dived into swim start with the whistle drawing very close to the starters lips just in time for race start.

Late last year Justin Betar decided to enter some events in the World Masters Games here in Sydney. He thought that his age might just get him in. As it turns out, the youngest competitor in the Games was 25 years and the oldest being 101 years, placing him closer in age to the 25 year old. The Games has a cracking motto “Fit, Fun, Forever Young”.

To be or not to be? The water temperature was teetering around the 23 degree mark when we arrived at Noosa. Fortunately for the non-swimmers amongst us, the mercury peaked at 23.7 the night before race day making wetsuits an option.

I keep expecting to get more of the June rains and winter chills but with the sunshine continuing, I think Spring is on its way! This was particularly so on the morning of Saturday, 25 July 2009 as I made my way to Mount Annan’s Botanical Gardens for the third in the series of the NSW Duathlon Championships.

Skins, arm warmers and gloves: the three essential items to survive the latest Hills Duathlon this Sunday, 12 July at Parramatta Park! It was a fresh start but lucky for us the rain held off, and as intended, the event was a great way to keep up training and race practice in the off season.
