Steve Larsen's dramatic win at Ironman Lake Placid in 2001 thanks to a blazing bike ride proved that he was not only one of the world's premier cyclists, he was also one of the world's best Ironman triathletes, too. Larson died on Tuesday evening after he collapsed during a run workout, according to a variety of sources.
The 39-year-old had five children with his wife, Carrie.
An accomplished professional cyclist, Larsen rode for the Motorola cycling team and raced for the United States on the roads before setting his sites on mountain biking, where he was a national champion, too.
Once he took up triathlon, he quickly came to the fore as well. In addition to his Lake Placid win in 2001 he also took the Vineman 70.3 title. He finished as high as ninth in Kona thanks to his blazing bike splits that splintered the men's field.
Larsen retired from professional racing in 2003 but continued to compete “for fun” – he was 70th overall at the Ford Ironman World Championship last year.
