Sporting Background: I tried my hand at most sports growing up, but mainly played Basketball, Tennis, Golf, Soccer and Cricket.

Years in Triathlon: Approximately 7. I always watched and enjoyed the Hawaiian Ironman on WWOS and the St George Sprint Series so thought I’d give triathlon a go. My first race was a Kurnell Sprint, I think I was last out of the water in my AG and remember cramping on the run like I’d been shot with a Taser!

Years as BTC member : 4

How you qualified?: 10th in AG at Yarrawonga (Victorian Champs) & 6th in AG at Wollongong (Aust Champs)

What you love about BTC? I love the fact I have made such great friends from the club, and we get to share in each other’s achievements (not just Triathlon related either!)

Favourite Tri Discipline: I enjoy the run the most, probably because I find it the easiest, but also because your results are all on you, no flash wetsuit or bike to help you along!

Inspiring quote:  “Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.”  My favourite motivational video clip on YouTube is “Take no days off – Giovanni Ruffin” it is American Football related but can certainly be related back to Triathlon, check it out before your next race!

Plans after the worlds: few weeks holiday in the States, including Chicago, NYC & LA. Triathlon wise, there will be a bit of a break before I ramp things up again for Ironman Cairns in June 2016.

Tell us more: I’m pretty much sport sport sport! If I’m not playing it, I’m watching it! Outside of this, my 9 to 5 is in the Banking industry in Broking Operations. I also have an amazing girlfriend Amy, she is my number one supporter !

Michael Bessel

Sporting Background : Athletics (100 to 800m).  Former state champion and selected in IAAF U19 Australian team for World Junior Championships when I was 17 for the 4 x 400m relay.  State Rep for AFL when I was a kid.  Decided about 5 years ago to start getting fit again.  Found cycling with mates on the weekend and jogging with the dog not competitive enough, so took up triathlon.
Years in Triathlon 3

Years as BTC member: 3

How you qualified: Sprint: Kurnell, Canberra, Hobart
Olympic: Wollongong, Canberra (including an extra lap of the cycle course).

What you love about BTC: Great friendly community for beginners. I had no idea what I was doing in my first season a few years ago and did a few of the Middle Head sprints, where a few old hands showed me what to do.

Non sporting info about you?
Married with two kids aged nearly 12 and 9 1/2.  Work in private equity, specialising in infrastructure investment.

Inspiring quote: "Possunt quia posse videntur".  They can because they think they can.  Virgil, the Roman poet.

Favourite discipline? Running (probably because it's my best leg).

Plans after the worlds?: Continue my recently instigated twice weekly swim squads at Mosman pool.

Good luck to all the BTC Crew heading to Chicago, such a great experience to put on the Aussie Colours, enjoy it !
